Research focus
  •  Exosome-mediated communication in the tumor microenvironment
  • Inflammatory mesenchymal stem cells (iMSCs) in metastasis and drug resistance
  • Deep Immunometabolic profiling of blood, bone marrow and tumor tissues
  • Therapeutic RNA delivery via exosomes

Curriculum Vitae
Rubina obtained a first Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and second one in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Bologna (Italy). In 2007 she started a PhD in Medical Biotechnology at the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute, Bologna, to study the molecular control of osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) in physiological and pathological conditions.  During her PhD, Rubina spent eight months at the Department of Gene Regulation of the Netherlands Cancer Institute, where she focused on the involvement of microRNAs in osteogenic differentiation and osteosarcoma development. In 2012 she obtained the FIRC (Italian Foundation for Cancer Research) postdoctoral fellowship to perform her research activity in the Exosomes Research Group. In 2013 Rubina obtained the L’Oréal-UNESCO award for Women in Science and in 2014 the FUV (Fondazione Umberto Veronesi) postdoctoral fellowship. In 2016 she obtained the Marie Skłodowska Curie grant to investigate the role of extracellular vesicle-mediated communication in osteosarcoma and bone-metastasizing tumors.

In 2017 Rubina obtained a KWF research grant from the Dutch Cancer Society to explore the Exosome-driven alterations of MSC immunomodulatory properties as novel therapeutic targets for bone cancers.
In 2019 Rubina received a Vumc CCA grant on the rational design of CRISPR-Cas9 delivery via extracellular vesicle.

Curriculum Vitae
Michiel Pegtel obtained a master's degree in biology from Groningen University while trained by Prof J.J. Letterio in immunology/oncology at the National Cancer Institute (NCI/NIH). Michiel obtained his PhD degree from Tufts University in Boston in viral oncology supervised by Prof. D. Thorley-Lawson and in collaboration with Prof. T. Golub (MIT/Harvard). Next he moved to the Netherlands Cancer Institute (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) for post-doctoral training in cell polarity and cancer metastasis in the laboratory of Dr. J. Collard. Currently, Michiel is assistant professor at the VU university medical center (Amsterdam) leading investigations how and why cancerous cells release genetic material via small vesicles called exosomes. The aim of the laboratory is to translate this knowledge into practical methods for non-invasive cancer diagnosis.
